Following the success of the Charnwood Liquid Displacement Cell Cushion in preventing pressure sores; we are pleased to announce the introduction of the Liquid Displacement Cell Mattress.

Many back pain sufferers have made the mistake of purchasing "orthopaedic" mattresses whose only attribute is firmness. A damaged spine needs total support which cannot be provided by a firm mattresses which causes the spine to bridge across lengths of the spine that are unsupported. An example of this is the spinal area of the waist where the spine bridges between the wide sacral area to the wide chest area. The inevitable result is the spine sagging which cramps the vertebral disks causing inflammation. In whichever position you choose to lie the spine needs support along its entire length, . The bed also needs to be soft and comfortable whilst still providing this total support.

Seamed and pocketed Liquid Displacement Cells with carefully controlled flow characteristics have been incorporated into a sandwich of high density, high quality, and fire resistant polyurethane foam. The mattress is designed for placement directly onto a divan base or bed. Delivered as three identical foam pads and a cover, assembly is very simple. The foam pads, each incorporating its own set of gel packs, are fitted end to end into the mattress cover and zip closed. The Charnwood Mattress, by increasing the patient's support area, is particularly beneficial for back pain sufferers.

The LDCs are constructed from a special laminated polymer sheet and each cell is tested to carry 200 kilograms (420 pounds) before assembly into the mattress. With welded seams, it is estimated that the bursting strength of the cells is at least 300 kilograms (630 pounds).

The specially formulated gel includes a biocide to ensure that no bacterial growth occurs. This safeguard not only ensures that there will be no risk of cross-infection but the gel itself is protected. The gel will not degrade causing lumps to form at some future date.

The cells are designed to allow the gel to flow slowly without causing instability and "bottoming out". The cells provide total support over the maximum available body area thereby lowering the pressure on the skeletal frame and delicate skin tissue. All LDCs are fixed in position inside the mattress to prevent movement of the cells when turning or changing position during rest.

The fire resistant foam is machine profiled across the width of the top surface to allow the foam to conform to the patient's shape. The profile is mushroom shaped in cross section and will flex up and down the bed to absorb shear stresses that are usually present when a patient lies in a semi-recumbent position. The profile will also collapse readily under a compression force thereby lowering interface pressure. The mushroom cross section profile also allows air to pass throughout the mattress that helps to deter bacterial growth within the mattress. This profiling allows a high density, therefore high quality, foam to be used successfully, thereby extending the life of the mattress. The function of the foan in the design is more as an insulator rather than the material that is expected to provide the support.

Manufactured from Permalon™ - a unique polyurethane laminated, multi-stretch, knitted fabric. The multi-stretch characteristics of this fabric further enhance the capabilities of the mattress for relieving the shear stresses that are highly damaging to skin tissue. The polyurethane outer laminate is waterproof yet "breathes". The only stitched seams in this cover are at the zip fastener side. All other seams are welded.
